The VA’s high-tech training program has returned with new rules, more spots, and no GI Bill “cost.”

A New Chapter for Veteran Tech Careers

The original VET TEC pilot program was so successful that it ran out of funding nearly every year. In response, Congress passed the DOLE Act, establishing VET TEC 2.0 as a more permanent fixture. If you have been looking to break into software engineering, cybersecurity, or data science, the window is officially opening this month.

1. What is VET TEC 2.0?

VET TEC (Veteran Employment Through Technology Education Courses) is a program where the VA pays for you to attend a high-intensity “bootcamp” or technical training program.

The best part? It does not count against your GI Bill entitlement. Even though you must have at least one day of GI Bill eligibility to qualify, the VA pays the tuition separately, keeping your 36 (or 48) months of education benefits untouched for future use.

2. New Eligibility Rules for 2026

The 2026 relaunch has introduced a few specific requirements you need to know:

  • Service Requirement: You must have served at least 36 months on active duty.
  • Age Limit: You must be under age 62 at the time your application is approved.
  • Active Duty Window: If you are still in uniform, you can apply if you are within 180 days of your separation date.
  • Verification: Unlike the pilot, VET TEC 2.0 requires monthly enrollment verification (via text or email) to keep your housing stipend active.

3. What Does the VA Cover?

If you are accepted into an approved VET TEC 2.0 provider, the VA provides:

  • Full Tuition and Fees: Paid directly to the school.
  • Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA): This is equal to the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents at the school’s location.
  • Course Materials: Many programs now include the cost of books and tech certifications (like Security+ or AWS) in the covered tuition.

4. Top Training Tracks for 2026

The VA has approved five primary areas for VET TEC 2.0 funding. Based on current job market demand in 2026, these are the most popular:

  • Computer Programming: Full-stack web development and mobile app engineering.
  • Cybersecurity: Information science and network security certifications.
  • Data Processing: Data science, AI modeling, and analytical processing.
  • Media Applications: UX/UI design and digital media engineering.

5. The “Employment Guarantee”

VET TEC 2.0 still uses the “Incentive Payment” model. The VA only pays the training provider the final 50% of your tuition once you secure meaningful employment in the field you studied. This means the schools are highly motivated to help you with resume building, interview prep, and job placement.

How to Prepare for the June 2026 Launch

While the VA will start accepting student applications in June, you should start your “recon” now:

  1. Check the GI Bill Comparison Tool: The VA is currently updating this tool with “VET TEC 2.0 Approved” badges for providers.
  2. Apply to the Provider First: Most bootcamps have their own entrance exams or interviews. Get your “Letter of Acceptance” ready now.
  3. Submit VA Form 22-10297: This is the new application form specifically for VET TEC 2.0.
